On Thursday, Matanyahu Englman, the State Comptroller, claimed that IDF Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi and Shin Bet Director Ronen Bar are hindering his internal investigation into the events of October 7.
“We are the only body examining what transpired,” Englman stated. “From the outset, I pledged to carry out an exhaustive review across all sectors—political, military, and civilian,” he elaborated. Englman noted that approximately 200 staff members from his office are actively involved in auditing the failures associated with October 7 and the “Iron Swords” conflict.
Engelman explained that for months, his office has been auditing the Prime Minister’s Office, the National Security Council (NSC), and the military secretariat. The teams are meticulously analyzing protocols, investigating cabinet meetings, and uncovering warnings that were raised but ultimately disregarded.
He indicated that while the defense ministers have been cooperative since the beginning, there is still a lack of full collaboration from the IDF and Shin Bet. “For the past year and a half, the IDF Chief of Staff and the head of Shin Bet have been obstructing the audit regarding the fundamental failures,” Englman asserted.
