On Monday, President Trump indicated that he might reconsider the financial aid provided to Jordan and Egypt if they do not comply with his request to permanently accept a substantial number of Palestinians currently in Gaza. This move aims to heighten pressure on these crucial allies in the region to support his controversial plan to relocate the entire Gaza population for redevelopment purposes.
During a press briefing from the White House, Trump stated that if Hamas failed to free all remaining Israeli hostages by “12 o’clock on Saturday,” the cease-fire agreement with Israel should be dismissed. “All hell is going to break out,” he warned reporters in the Oval Office, while noting that the ultimate decision to end the cease-fire lies with Israel.
Jordan and Egypt, both significant recipients of U.S. military and economic assistance, have firmly rejected any notion of resettling Palestinians in their nations. However, Trump asserted on Monday that the continuation of this aid may be at risk.
“If they don’t agree, I would consider withholding aid,” he stated to journalists, responding to a question just before his scheduled meeting with King Abdullah II of Jordan.
Trump elaborated on the concept of forcibly displacing around two million Palestinians, a suggestion that some experts have criticized as tantamount to a war crime and ethnic cleansing. In a recent interview with Fox News, he expressed that he did not foresee those Palestinians leaving Gaza as part of this redevelopment initiative ever returning.
