The Dallas Mavericks announced on Tuesday that center Daniel Gafford has sustained a right knee sprain and is set to be reevaluated in approximately two weeks.

This latest injury contributes to an already challenging situation for the Mavericks’ frontcourt, which is grappling with setbacks affecting newly acquired center Anthony Davis, Dereck Lively II, and Dwight Powell.

Gafford’s injury occurred early in the team’s overtime defeat against the Sacramento Kings, during which he logged just 10 minutes on the court before exiting.

This injury comes on the heels of a surprising trade that sent franchise star Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers in exchange for Davis. Mavericks GM Nico Harrison expressed excitement about the potential of a Davis-led roster, envisioning a robust frontcourt with several talented big men complementing each other on the court.

However, Dallas will face delays in realizing this vision. Lively is recovering from a stress fracture in his right foot and is expected to be out for two to three months. Meanwhile, Davis is anticipated to be sidelined for multiple weeks due to a left adductor strain, as reported by ESPN earlier this week.

Veteran player Powell is also contending with a hip issue and currently lacks a definitive timeline for his comeback.

In light of Gafford’s injury, second-year center Olivier-Maxence Prosper stepped up in the Monday night game and played for 34 minutes. Additionally, P.J. Washington, who is dealing with an ankle injury, may also take on a center role in a small-ball lineup upon his return.

As of Tuesday night, the Mavericks were positioned at No. 8 in the Western Conference standings.
