CLEARWATER, Fla. — Bryce Harper truly aims to be a lifelong member of the Phillies.

On Monday morning at BayCare Ballpark, he revealed the significance of his dedication by rolling up his right sleeve. This offseason, he got a delicate tattoo on his right forearm portraying the iconic Phillie Phanatic riding his ATV.

“I’ve wanted this for quite some time,” Harper shared. “The Phanatic and Philadelphia hold great significance for me. When I think of the Phanatic, it’s him on an ATV. I thought that was pretty cool.”

At age 32, Harper has been a fan of the Phanatic even before he inked his 13-year, $330 million contract with the Phillies in 2019. Since joining the team, the relationship between the two-time NL MVP and the beloved green mascot has flourished. Harper has previously donned a custom-designed Phanatic-inspired suit to games and wielded a Phanatic bat during last summer’s London Series, where the Phanatic was depicted as a royal guard.

“I just love the city and the Phanatic,” Harper said. “It’s all about having fun.”

While searching for expert tattoo artists, Harper discovered Utah’s Hannah Matthews. “She was amazing. I found her details when looking up fine-line artists and reached out. To my surprise, she volunteered to do the tattoo herself,” he noted.

“She came over and said, ‘We’ll manage despite the chaos at my home.’” Matthews shared her delight about working on the tattoo, expressing her passion for baseball on her social media.

This season, if fans catch close-up shots of Harper at the plate, they might spot the tattoo peeking between his often-taped right wrist and forearm sleeve — with the Phanatic’s adventure evident as he appears to steer his ATV toward Harper’s swing.

“I thought it looked pretty cool,” Harper explained about the design’s alignment with his swing motion.
