INDIANAPOLIS — The Washington Commanders have officially allowed two-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle Jonathan Allen to explore trade options, according to sources from CBS Sports.

Allen, who was drafted in the first round in 2017, is currently in the last year of his contract with the Commanders. His base salary for the 2025 season, set at $15.5 million, is not guaranteed.

Having spent all eight seasons of his career with Washington, Allen signed a lucrative four-year extension worth $72 million in 2021. Since then, he has achieved Pro Bowl honors twice, solidifying his status as a key player.

Unfortunately, he faced significant challenges last season, tearing his pectoral muscle and missing half the games. In the eight contests he played, he recorded three sacks and participated in all three postseason games for Washington.

As the Commanders prepare for a potential future without Allen, they have already extended Daron Payne with a $90 million deal in 2023 and drafted Johnny Newton in the second round last year.

Allen’s cap hit is considerable, ranking third on the team in 2025 at $22.47 million. Moving him through a trade or release could free up nearly $17 million in valuable cap space.

Interest in Allen has surged, with several teams reaching out recently. Discussions around his potential trade are expected to intensify this week at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis.
