Apple is gearing up to update its MacBook Air lineup with the new M4 chips, as reported by Mark Gurman in today’s edition of the Power On newsletter from Bloomberg. This upcoming upgrade will complete the transition of the MacBook series to the M4 architecture, set to launch in March.

While Gurman did not specify the exact release date, he mentioned that Apple is currently preparing its marketing, sales, and retail teams for the launch. As part of this process, the company is looking to clear out existing retail inventory of the current models. The refresh is expected to include both the 13-inch and 15-inch versions, mirroring the dual launch we saw last year.

Since the shift to Apple Silicon, the MacBook Air has closely mirrored the specifications of the entry-level MacBook Pro but in a sleeker design that features fewer ports and lacks a cooling fan. The 14-inch Pro model comes equipped with a 10-core CPU, a 10-core GPU, and 16GB of RAM. Our review of the base model M4 MacBook Pro provides a glimpse into the performance you can anticipate from this setup. We hope to see the new MacBook Air models inherit the Pro’s standout feature: the ability to connect two external displays while keeping the lid open.

With the focus on the MacBook Air transition, the Mac Studio and Mac Pro remain the only Apple products that have yet to receive M4 upgrades, still utilizing the M2-generation chips. Gurman has indicated that the Mac Studio could see its M4 update between March and June, while the Mac Pro’s refresh may arrive sometime between June and the fall season.
