Elon Musk’s Quest to Enter the Indian Electric Vehicle Market
Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, has long aimed to penetrate the Indian automotive sector but has faced significant trade obstacles that have complicated this endeavor. Recently, as Musk’s influence has grown within U.S. leadership, particularly in his advisory role to President Trump, indications suggest that Tesla is gearing up to launch its electric vehicles in India.
In 2021, Tesla established a local subsidiary and has maintained a rapport with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, a partnership that began a decade ago. Despite these efforts, Tesla has yet to set up a manufacturing plant or a dedicated sales network in India, resulting in only a handful of cars sold in the region.
However, the Trump administration has prioritized the promotion of American car sales in India, urging Modi to relax the country’s import restrictions on automobiles.
Earlier this month, Musk met with Modi during the prime minister’s visit to Washington for discussions with Trump. According to three real estate professionals in New Delhi and Mumbai, Tesla is currently pursuing leases for substantial commercial properties in both cities, signaling a proactive approach towards establishing a presence in the Indian market.
