LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Eyewitnesses recounted a harrowing scene where three individuals lost their lives due to gunfire outside a driver’s license office in Kentucky. Among the victims was a man who was shot multiple times by armed individuals wearing masks.
On Friday evening, the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office released a statement identifying the victims, whose ages spanned from 18 to 33 years. Louisville Metro Police reported that officers arrived shortly after noon on Friday to discover one man deceased at the location, while two women were critically injured and later succumbed to their injuries in a hospital.
According to the coroner’s report, 18-year-old Leslye M. Harbin Jr. died on site due to multiple gunshot wounds, while the two women, 33-year-old Antwanette Chillers and 29-year-old Raysa Pacios Valdes, passed away from gunshot wounds after being admitted to medical care.
Authorities have not disclosed whether the victims were acquainted with one another or the individuals responsible for the shooting.
Witnesses described a scene of panic at the bustling office, which had a line extending out the door. Jalen Eddings told WHAS-TV that he had initially entered the office but opted to wait in his car due to the long wait. He recounted seeing two masked gunmen firing repeatedly at the man, including while he was on the ground, before fleeing the scene. Eddings mentioned he did not observe the assailants targeting the women.
“I was in shock; I couldn’t believe it. It felt like something out of a movie,” Eddings remarked.
A significant police presence was evident at the state Driver Licensing Office located on the southern edge of Louisville in response to the incident. Evidence markers were placed approximately 20 feet (around six meters) from the building’s entrance as part of the investigation.
Police Major Donald Boeckman stated that the shooter escaped in a vehicle but did not provide a description of it, noting that investigators were actively reviewing surveillance footage.
“This is an absolute tragedy, and I’m surprised that there weren’t more injuries,” Boeckman expressed.
Aaron Ellis, a representative of the police department, indicated in an email on Saturday that there were no new updates regarding the search for the suspects. Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear took to social media to label the shooting as “a senseless act of violence.”
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, responsible for the operation of the license office, announced that security personnel successfully secured the building shortly after the incident, ensuring all employees remained unharmed.
Another witness, Ali Raza, recounted being inside the office when he suddenly heard multiple gunshots followed by screams from those around him. He praised a security guard for promptly instructing everyone to get on the ground, stating, “He told us to get down. He essentially saved us.”
