Apple continues to enhance the personalization of the iPhone with a new feature in iOS 18.4 that introduces two additional categories for setting default applications based on your geographic location.

Expanded Default App Options: Translation and Navigation

For several years, Apple has included some level of default app settings within the Settings app. With the introduction of iOS 18.2, Apple expanded this feature by adding new categories and a centralized hub for easy access.

Now, iOS 18.4 brings even more options for users to customize their default apps.

The newly added Translation category is available both in the United States and internationally, allowing users to switch their default from Apple’s Translate app to alternatives such as Google Translate.

For users located in the EU, there’s an exciting new addition: the Navigation category.

Google Maps Icon

While it’s unfortunate that the Navigation feature is exclusive to EU users, those residing there can now set their iPhone’s default navigation app from Apple Maps to options such as Google Maps.

Each default app category operates slightly differently. Generally, your selected default app will be utilized for links and built-in operating system features across the entire system for applicable functions.

For instance, if you choose Waze as your default for navigation, tapping an address received through iMessage should automatically open that location in your chosen app.

To configure your default applications on your iPhone, navigate to Settings ⇾ Apps ⇾ Default Apps.
