New York Yankees Lift Beard Ban Imposed by George Steinbrenner Nearly 50 Years Ago

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — The New York Yankees have lifted their longstanding beard ban, a decision made 49 years after it was originally enacted by owner George Steinbrenner. This change is geared toward enhancing player recruitment as the iconic franchise aims to clinch its first World Series title since 2009.

Hal Steinbrenner, the current owner and son of the late George Steinbrenner, announced this significant policy shift on Friday, just ahead of the team’s spring training opener.

“My father had military roots and believed that a team should present itself in a disciplined way,” Hal Steinbrenner remarked during a press conference, accompanied by general manager Brian Cashman. “While that was very important to my father, nothing outweighed the goal of winning, and that is what I keep in mind.”

The beard prohibition was established by George Steinbrenner in 1976 during spring training, banning long hair and beards while permitting mustaches. Players adhered to these guidelines, though some occasionally tested the limits by not shaving or letting their hair grow past their collars.

After taking over as controlling owner in November 2008, Hal Steinbrenner consulted key players like Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton, and Gerrit Cole during private meetings to discuss potential changes. On Friday morning, he stated, “We will amend our expectations to permit our players and coaching staff to maintain well-groomed beards moving forward.”

Just days ago, the Yankees reminded players in the clubhouse to come clean-shaven for photo day, which further highlights the recent policy shift.

New All-Star closer Devin Williams, who was acquired in an offseason trade from Milwaukee, sported a beard for his photo, marking a departure from the previous expectations. Williams will be eligible for free agency after this season and had maintained a beard during his time with the Brewers.

“The New York Yankees are unique,” Cashman explained. “This organization holds a special place in baseball history. That logo carries significant meaning, and we want our past, present, and future players to recognize that. While we will retain certain traditions, as Hal mentioned, our primary focus remains on maintaining a championship-caliber franchise and pursuing victory.”

Outfielder Alex Verdugo underwent a trim when he joined the Yankees prior to the 2024 season due to the new regulations.

George Steinbrenner, who purchased the Yankees in 1973, passed away in 2010. In 1976, he expressed his views, saying, “I have nothing against long hair per se, but I’m trying to instill a sense of order and discipline in the ballclub because I believe discipline is vital for an athlete.”
