According to Apple’s chip development head, Johny Srouji, the newly launched C1 modem included in the iPhone 16e marks merely the beginning of their plans.
In an interview with Reuters, Srouji stated, “The C1 is just the beginning. We will continually enhance this technology with each generation, creating a platform that will significantly set our products apart.”
Apple has announced its intention to integrate its custom cellular modems into more devices over the next few years. Industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has revealed that the upcoming iPhone 17 Air will also feature the C1 modem.
This proprietary modem will enable Apple to lessen its dependence on Qualcomm, the current modem supplier for various iPhone models.
Qualcomm anticipates its share of the iPhone modem market could dwindle to as low as 20% by next year.
The C1 modem is produced using a 4-nanometer fabrication process, with its transceiver built using a 7-nanometer process. Srouji highlighted that this modem stands as the most sophisticated technology Apple has engineered, having been rigorously tested with 180 carriers across 55 countries to verify essential functions such as mobile data and voice calls.
Performance tests for the C1 modem are still pending.
Srouji emphasized that Apple’s aim with the C1 modem is not to simply match the top specifications or performance metrics of competitors like Qualcomm. Although the C1 modem may not offer the highest attainable 5G speeds and lacks mmWave support, Apple claims it to be the most energy-efficient modem ever used in an iPhone, contributing to the iPhone 16e achieving the longest battery life among 6.1-inch iPhone models. As expected, the modem is closely integrated with the software and hardware of the iPhone 16e, including the A18 chip.
“I believe we’re crafting something truly unique,” Srouji stated.
