Former President Donald Trump’s recent proposal for the U.S. to take control of Gaza and the potential removal of approximately two million Palestinians from the area has prompted significant alarm among legal experts. As more facets of this plan become public, the implications for international law violations continue to grow.
In a recent interview with Fox News, Trump stated that under his proposed strategy, Palestinians living in Gaza would not be permitted to return, directly contravening a fundamental principle of international law, and contributing to accusations of potential international crimes.
These remarks seem to contradict efforts by his advisors, who have attempted to clarify his initial stance by suggesting he was advocating for a temporary, voluntary relocation of Gaza’s residents—an approach that might have held legal justification.
“Trump is effectively normalizing major violations of international law as part of his policy proposals,” commented Janina Dill, co-director of the Oxford Institute for Ethics, Law, and Armed Conflict. “His casual approach to these serious offenses undermines the core tenets of international legal norms.”
