NALC and Postal Service Reach Stalemate, Moving to Interest Arbitration
Today, the Executive Council of the NALC convened to evaluate the outcomes of the 15-day negotiation period that followed the recommencement of contract discussions with the Postal Service on February 3, as outlined in Article 16 of the NALC Constitution. The Council unanimously decided against accepting terms from the Postal Service that would have led to a modified tentative agreement to present to eligible members for a second ratification vote. Consequently, the NALC has informed USPS officials that we have reached an impasse regarding the new collective bargaining agreement.
The ongoing disagreements concerning the new contract will now be referred to the interest arbitration process. The parties have appointed Arbitrator Dennis R. Nolan to chair the three-member arbitration panel. Details regarding the hearing dates for the interest arbitration will be provided once the schedule is finalized.
“Although there was some progress on critical issues for letter carriers during this 15-day period of sincere negotiations, it was insufficient to secure a fair contract for our members,” stated NALC President Brian L. Renfroe. “We have been diligently preparing for interest arbitration since before we officially reopened this round of contract talks. We are confident in the strength of our case and are committed to vigorously advocating for the best possible collective bargaining agreement for our letter carriers.”
