Zelenskyy Claims Trump Operates Within a Russian 'Disinformation Network'

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Tensions between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and former U.S. President Donald Trump escalated sharply on Wednesday. Zelenskyy accused Trump of operating within a Russian-created “disinformation space,” while Trump labeled Zelenskyy “a dictator without elections,” comments likely to complicate ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict.

Zelenskyy expressed a desire for Trump’s team to be more honest, responding to a series of concerning claims made by Trump the previous day. Notably, Trump inaccurately suggested that Ukraine bore responsibility for the war, which will enter its fourth year next week.

This exchange highlights a significant shift in relations between the U.S. and Ukraine, particularly considering the strong alliance fostered under Trump’s predecessor. During former President Joe Biden’s administration, the U.S. supplied vital military aid to Ukraine to resist the invasion and worked rigorously to isolate Russia on the global stage.

In his social media statement, Trump criticized Zelenskyy for delaying elections that were set for April 2024 due to the war’s impact.

Trump further derided Zelenskyy as “a moderately successful comedian” who coerced the U.S. into investing $350 billion into a war that he claimed was unnecessary and unwinnable, stating that without U.S. intervention and “TRUMP,” Zelenskyy would not achieve any resolution.

Zelenskyy retorted to recent comments, emphasizing awareness of the disinformation circulating and stating, “We understand that it is coming from Russia,” accusing Trump of dwelling in this misleading narrative. He articulated hope that U.S. envoy Keith Kellogg would take the opportunity to gauge public sentiments in Ukraine regarding their leadership and Trump’s statements.

In the midst of this discord, Putin expressed a desire to meet with Trump, insinuating the potential for thawing relations between their nations. Following the Russian invasion on February 24, 2022, which Putin justified through distorted narratives about protecting eastern Ukrainian civilians, tensions have only intensified. Putin and Zelenskyy have both voiced the need for face-to-face discussions, highlighting the complexity of the current geopolitical landscape.

After the recent discussions in Riyadh, Putin claimed they were “very positive,” noting a shift within the American delegation that suggested a willingness to negotiate without bias. Putin insisted that any successful resolution to issues, including the Ukrainian crisis, hinges on rebuilding trust between the United States and Russia, asserting that Ukraine would not be excluded from future negotiations.

The Ukrainian administration, along with European allies, remains apprehensive about their lack of involvement in discussions between U.S. and Russian officials, fearing the outcomes might not favor Kyiv’s interests.
