Investigators are delving deeper into the circumstances surrounding a Delta Air Lines regional jet that upended and ignited during its landing at Toronto Pearson International Airport on Monday afternoon.

While there were no fatalities among passengers, Delta confirmed on Tuesday that two individuals remained hospitalized after 21 passengers were taken to nearby medical facilities.

Cory Tkatch from Peel Regional Paramedic Services reported that responders encountered various injuries, including back strains, head trauma, as well as anxiety and reactions linked to fuel exposure. Thankfully, no injuries reported were deemed life-threatening, according to officials on Tuesday. Fire crews indicated that most passengers managed to evacuate the aircraft independently.

Footage of the incident circulating online captured the moment the aircraft made contact with the runway, tilting on its right side before flipping over and producing flames alongside a plume of black smoke. Images depict the fuselage overturned on the runway, with its right wing missing.

Officials at the airport and emergency services refrained from commenting on any possible reasons behind the crash.

“It’s not the time for speculation about the crash’s cause,” stated Deborah Flint, CEO of the Greater Toronto Airports Authority. She emphasized that investigative bodies are conducting a thorough examination to identify all factors contributing to the incident and anticipate the findings.

Flint noted that the airport experienced 20 inches of snowfall from Thursday to Sunday, surpassing the total accumulation from the previous winter, but could not confirm if the weather played a part in the accident.

Representatives from the Transportation Safety Board of Canada are on-site, and officials from the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration are also involved in the inquiry, she added.

The damaged aircraft is expected to remain on the runway for approximately 48 hours as investigators carry out their work, according to Flint. The incident has resulted in the closure of two runways at Toronto Pearson Airport, causing a significant number of flight cancellations. Over 440 flights were canceled in the past 24 hours by Tuesday afternoon, as reported by flight tracker FlightAware.

The Mitsubishi-built CRJ-900, operated by regional airline Endeavor Air, was concluding its flight from Minneapolis to Toronto on Monday with four crew members and 76 passengers on board.

Flint praised the prompt actions of first responders and the flight crew, which led to the safe evacuation of all passengers and ultimately averted casualties. “I cannot express enough appreciation for the crew, the flight attendants, pilots, and our emergency responders for their swift and effective response,” she conveyed during a press conference.
