On Monday, a Delta Air Lines flight flipped while landing at a Toronto airport, prompting emergency services to rush to the scene to assist those trapped inside the overturned plane.

Authorities at Toronto Pearson International Airport confirmed that all passengers and crew members were located. Delta Air Lines indicated that 18 individuals sustained injuries and were transported to hospitals for treatment. A spokesperson for Peel Regional Police mentioned that the investigation is being led by the Greater Toronto Airports Authority.

Photographs shared on X showed the aircraft in an inverted position with at least one wing missing. As more images surfaced, Delta clarified that there were 76 passengers and four crew members aboard.

Delta reported shortly after the incident that preliminary findings indicate there were no fatalities, with 18 injured passengers promptly taken for medical care. “Our main priority is to support those affected,” the airline stated around 5:40 p.m. ET.

Later, at approximately 10:30 p.m. ET, Delta announced that “Some patients who were initially transported to local hospitals have since been released.”

Ornge, an air ambulance service in Ontario, informed Business Insider that three individuals—including a child, a man in his 60s, and a woman in her 40s—suffered critical injuries and were admitted to hospitals in Toronto.

The Bombardier CRJ900, designated as Flight 4819, was operated by Delta’s regional subsidiary, Endeavor Air.

Due to the emergency, departures and arrivals to the airport were suspended but resumed by 5 p.m. local time. FlightAware reported that over 330 flights were delayed, while nearly 400 were canceled on Monday.

“The airport remains operational. Passengers are advised to verify their flight details before heading to the airport,” the airport communicated on X later that evening.

Delta is actively assisting customers travelling to, from, or through Toronto and encourages them to check their flight status using the Delta app.

US Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy announced on X that FAA investigators are heading to Toronto, with the investigation being spearheaded by the Transportation Safety Board of Canada.

Canada’s Minister of Transportation, Anita Anand, expressed gratitude to first responders and airport workers via an X post. Earlier, she communicated with Duffy regarding the incident and confirmed that the FAA would send investigators to support the Canadian authorities.

A Challenging Period for Aviation Safety

This Delta incident occurs just two and a half weeks after an American Airlines flight collided with a military Black Hawk helicopter over Washington D.C., which claimed 67 lives.

The occurrence at Toronto raises ongoing concerns regarding aviation safety. Although the incident took place in Canada, the aircraft was under the regulation of the US-based Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

On the same day, the Trump administration dismissed multiple FAA staff members, including those from the safety division, as reported by the workers’ union.

Among the terminated employees was Jason King, who had a significant role in addressing safety issues, as noted by Washington television station WUSA.

He mentioned that his team’s responsibilities included investigating the midair collision over Washington D.C.

The Delta and American flights are part of a troubling series of aviation safety incidents that have unfolded since December. For instance, an Azerbaijan Airlines Embraer plane crash on Christmas Day in Kazakhstan resulted in 38 fatalities.

Just days later, a Boeing 737 operated by Jeju Air crashed in South Korea, claiming 179 lives and leaving only two survivors.

Moreover, a small general aviation aircraft crashed in Pennsylvania shortly after the American accident, leading to six deaths on board and one on the ground.

On February 6, a regional airline in Alaska also met with tragedy, resulting in the loss of 10 lives.
