By bringing Alex Bregman on board, the Boston Red Sox have enhanced their lineup versatility significantly.

Bregman showcased his talent at third base during his nine-year tenure with the Houston Astros, but this position hasn’t been an area of concern for Boston in recent years. Rafael Devers has firmly established himself as the team’s third baseman since joining the Red Sox in 2017, and he’s keen on remaining at the hot corner moving forward.

“Third base is my position,” Devers stated through a translator on Monday. “It’s where I’ve played. I’m not sure what their plans are. We had a discussion, and I expressed my preferences. Beyond that, I’m uncertain what will happen.”

Red Sox manager Alex Cora and chief baseball officer Craig Breslow both affirmed their commitment to keeping Devers at third base earlier this offseason. However, these assurances were made prior to the team’s acquisition of Bregman. When Bregman was officially welcomed by Boston on Sunday, Cora did not confirm any specific defensive configurations.

For the Red Sox, this presents a positive dilemma, allowing them to strategize their starting lineup depending on the matchups. However, Cora and the coaching staff are likely to hold off on any definitive plans until players have gained ample experience during spring training in Fort Myers, Florida.
