Take a moment to step outside after sunset and gaze at the celestial canvas above. In an extraordinary event, five of the brightest planets — Venus, Jupiter, Mars, Mercury, and Saturn — along with the more elusive Uranus and Neptune, will align in a stunning arc, resembling a cosmic dance of planets.

While it’s common to witness one, two, or even three planets positioned closely in the sky, seeing all seven at once is a rare spectacle, not to be repeated until October 2028.

Planetary alignments, or “planetary parades,” occur when multiple planets gather on the same side of the sun, becoming visible from our vantage point on Earth. This winter, six planets have been in view, with Mercury about to make its appearance shortly.

“Mercury has always been the elusive guest in the evening sky,” notes sky observer and author “Astro” Bob King from Duluth.

Mark your calendars for February 23 – 25 in Minnesota, with the optimal viewing opportunity on February 24, according to King.

Locating all seven planets in alignment may prove challenging, but King assures that “with ideal conditions and a clear agricultural horizon, it’s possible to witness this astronomical event.”

Most of the major planets will be visible to the naked eye if you find a dark area far from city lights. However, Neptune and Uranus, being farther away, will require binoculars or a telescope to spot.

In Minnesota, begin your observation by looking toward the west-southwest horizon for Mercury and Saturn, which will appear as “eyes just above the horizon,” as described by King. Be mindful not to linger too long; these planets will set just over an hour after sunset, as reported by www.space.com. A pair of binoculars and a clear view of the horizon will enhance your chances of viewing this celestial display.
