Pence Emerges as Vocal Conservative Voice as He Navigates Political Landscape
Washington, D.C. (AP) — A political advocacy group closely linked to Mike Pence has invested nearly $1 million in advertising campaigns against Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who was chosen by Donald Trump to oversee the nation’s health departments. Pence is actively voicing his concerns, urging the current administration to maintain strong alliances with traditional partners abroad, while simultaneously engaging with congressional leaders through letters and opinion pieces.
Recently, Pence shared a past article reflecting on the constraints of presidential authority, sparked by Trump’s assertion that “He who saves his Country does not violate any Law.”
Pence is positioning himself as a rare Republican willing to publicly challenge the current administration. This shift is notable given his previous alliance with Trump, which was strained following the 2020 election when Trump refused to concede.
While leading Advancing American Freedom, his political organization, Pence emphasizes that they don’t aspire to be labeled as "Never Trump." Instead, they aim to support the administration when they agree and voice concerns when they diverge, advocating for enduring conservative values that have been overshadowed by Trump’s "Make America Great Again" populist agenda.
“We are calling balls and strikes,” Pence remarked during an interview with The Associated Press.
His opposition to Kennedy, who has since been confirmed as the Secretary of Health and Human Services, was rooted in Kennedy’s previous advocacy for abortion rights. Pence’s group is now focused on lobbying against Lori Chavez-DeRemer, Trump’s nominated Secretary of Labor, criticizing her perceived pro-union stance. They also intend to push for increased military funding, reduced deficits, and the permanence of 2017 tax cuts. Pence seeks to persuade Trump to halt imposing tariffs on allies.
In a recent conversation with AP, Pence discussed his ongoing efforts and his relationship with Trump—highlighting a highly scrutinized handshake at President Jimmy Carter’s funeral and his wife’s subtle reaction as the two former presidents took their seats.
Pence’s Vision for the Future
“What do you see as your role and the role of AAF over the next four years?” was one question posed to Pence.
“My goal is to serve as an anchor amidst the political currents,” Pence replied. “The direction seems to lean toward increased government control. As conservatives, it’s our duty to keep the party grounded in the timeless principles that have shaped my career.”
Pence outlined core values that resonate with him: strong national defense, a commitment to American leadership globally, limited government, fiscal accountability, the sanctity of life, and traditional values—views he believes align with the historical principles of the Republican Party.
When discussing his strategy for selecting battles, Pence insisted that principles guide his decisions, making it clear that personal grievances do not influence his stance. His encounters with members of the new administration at recent events showed mutual respect, signaling a willingness to work together despite past disagreements.
Concerning the nomination of RFK, Pence expressed his view that supporting an abortion rights advocate for the Secretary of HHS is a significant departure from decades of pro-life leadership within Republican administrations.
The discussion turned to the feedback Pence received regarding his advocacy from colleagues who were supportive but chose not to publicly join him, reflecting a cautious political climate within the party.
When asked about the reluctance of Republicans to voice dissent openly, Pence noted that stepping forward requires courage, and he hopes that his actions encourage others to stand up for their principles.
Looking ahead, Pence remains optimistic about establishing a strong conservative foundation within the party, despite the dominant populist rhetoric. He believes that many Republican voters still hold onto the traditional conservative ideals they have always supported.
In a revealing anecdote from a campaign event, a farmer expressed agreement with Pence’s vision but ultimately chose to support Trump, highlighting the complex loyalty many voters feel towards the former president, especially in the context of recent political challenges.
Reflections on Personal Dynamics
Pence also reflected on personal dynamics at the Carter funeral, where his wife remained aloof toward the Trumps—a moment that resonated with many and sparked significant online discussions. He acknowledged the support they received from the public in the aftermath of that day.
Despite the ongoing rifts, Pence remains focused on moving forward and hopes to leverage his influence constructively for the conservative agenda, believing such efforts are beneficial for America as a whole.
