SAN DIEGO – Ludvig Åberg was just 8 years old when Tiger Woods triumphed at the 2008 U.S. Open. While he wasn’t part of the tournament’s target audience at the time, this Swedish golfer has watched some old footage of that event.

“I vaguely remember watching the tournament, but I don’t recall every detail. What stands out are the clips I’ve seen,” Åberg remarked after his impressive comeback victory at the Genesis Invitational. “The putt Woods made on the 13th hole during Saturday and the one on 18 to clinch the win are unforgettable. Talking with him about those moments is surreal.”

The legendary “putt on 18” holds special significance for Åberg. In 2008, Woods famously sank a putt on the 72nd hole to force a playoff against Rocco Mediate, which was directed towards a similar front-right hole location. On Sunday, Åberg faced a comparable but shorter putt to secure his second PGA Tour victory.

In order to honor Woods, who hosts the Genesis Invitational, officials selected the 2008 U.S. Open hole location for the final round instead of the usual Sunday placement used during Round 3 of the Farmers Insurance Open.

Åberg made a 7-foot birdie putt on the final hole, wrapping up his performance with a 66 that featured birdies on four out of his last six holes, ultimately leading to a narrow, one-stroke win over Maverick McNealy at Woods’ prestigious tournament.
