10:15 p.m.: That’s a wrap from Ball Arena!
After three exciting days filled with wrestling, pins, and fierce competition, the Pomona boys have once again claimed victory. Traven Sharon has now entered the four-time champions club, dedicating his win to a late friend. Additionally, numerous wrestlers achieved the redemption they’ve been striving for all year, though not all succeeded.
Check out our comprehensive championship results below, along with team scores.
We’ll see you back here next February!
9:15 p.m.: The Phoenix, a collaborative team from Western Slope based at Grand Junction Central, has secured the girls’ 5A team championship—marking Central’s first-ever team title in any sport since 2002.
Even though the Phoenix placed two girls in the finals, neither managed to capture gold. Matilda Hruby from Brighton dominated Shylee Tuzon at 155 pounds, pinning her just 22 seconds into the third period. At 170 pounds, Anabell Gerrard of Thompson Valley, wrestling for Loveland’s combined team, decisively pinned Claris McCoy from the Phoenix in 1:34.
9:10 p.m.: Westminster celebrates its first girls’ wrestling champion as senior Dakota Hull earned victory at 145 pounds in Class 4A by pinning Chatfield’s Ryne Hickey. Both competitors came into the match undefeated. — Patrick Saunders
8:02 p.m.: A brief altercation occurred in the stands at Ball Arena, which security managed swiftly. The disruption involved some Brighton fans, leading to a few ejections. — Kyle Newman
7:19 p.m.: Pomona’s junior 140-pounder Timberly Martinez is one win away from achieving a four-time title in Class 5A. She pinned Discovery Canyon’s Sophia Flores in the second period, securing her third state championship gold. — Patrick Saunders
6:50 p.m.: The Pomona Panthers look poised to clinch their title again.
In a highly anticipated match at Class 5A 144 pounds, Derek Barrows from Pomona narrowly defeated Mikey Lopez of Ponderosa with a score of 4-2. This result likely seals Pomona’s seventh consecutive Class 5A title, just one shy of tying Ponderosa’s record of eight titles in a row from 2003 to 2010. — Kyle Newman
6:38 p.m.: Pueblo East has already secured the boys Class 4A title, their third championship in the last four years.
Deven Lopez, a sophomore at 132 pounds, dominated in his match against Palisade’s Kadin Mulford with a 9-4 decision. Despite battling a ruptured tendon in his right middle finger, Lopez is halfway to a four-peat after winning the 126-pound title last year.
“We’re just tough, hardworking individuals who don’t have much, yet we give everything we have on the mat,” Lopez explained. “That’s what it’s all about in the end. People have been saying I could be a four-time champion since before I entered high school, and I strive to prove them right.”
Over the past year, Lopez has achieved significant placement at national tournaments, pointing towards an even more successful summer ahead. — Kyle Newman
6:16 p.m.: Prairie View’s Jaydin Cuevas completed an impressive 43-0 season in Class 5A girls 115 pounds, winning by technical fall against Adam City’s Phoebe Gutierrez with a dominating 16-0 score. — Patrick Saunders
6:06 p.m.: Deven Lopez is making headway toward more titles. The Pueblo East sophomore triumphed at the Class 4A 132-pound final with a strong 9-4 win against Kadin Mulford from Palisade. This victory gives Lopez two consecutive state titles at 132, as his team approaches the Class 4A boys championship. — Matt Schubert
5:55 p.m.: We have yet another three-time champion! Jefferson’s Samuel Rosales pinned Alameda International’s Anthony Torrez in just 1:35. — Matt Schubert
5:48 p.m.: Key match-ups are unfolding in the Class 5A boys title chase.
Pomona and Ponderosa each secured victories in their initial individual finals. The next three matches feature Jaylen Burge (Ponderosa) vs. Elijah Banks (Pine Creek) at 132, Angel Serrano (Pomona) vs. Chance Mathews (Cherokee Trail) at 138, and Derek Barrows (Pomona) vs. Michael Lopez Jr. (Ponderosa) at 144. These crucial matches could determine the outcome of the 5A title. — Matt Schubert
5:38 p.m.: Traven Sharon’s quest for the four-time title is fulfilled as he pinned Meeker’s Koy Weber in the second period, becoming Colorado’s 35th four-time state champion. — Kyle Newman
5:32 p.m.: Mountain View’s Isaiah Harrison has earned his third state title, ending his season with an impressive 53-0 record after a convincing 21-3 technical fall over Palisade’s Teagan Young. Harrison, who has committed to Wyoming, shared that his approach to wrestling significantly transformed after finishing fifth at state during his freshman year.
“In my freshman year, I wasn’t mature, and I didn’t take the sport seriously,” Harrison noted. “My coaches inspired me to improve academically, emphasizing that wrestling could lead to great opportunities if I fully committed.”
Following his first state title, he placed second at the Fargo Nationals that summer and hasn’t looked back since. He is now Mountain View’s inaugural three-time champion. — Kyle Newman
5:04 p.m.: The tournament’s top-ranked wrestler, Doherty’s Katey Valdez, secured her second state championship by defeating Chatfield’s Lola Gonzales in 4:35, capping her senior year at Class 5A girls 105 pounds with a 40-1 record. Valdez celebrated her victory with a backflip, a signature move during practices.
The only competitor to defeat her this season was Bennett freshman Emma Faczak, who clinched her own title nearby by overcoming Canon City’s Piper Montoya, 8-1, in the Class 4A girls 105-pound category. — Matt Schubert
4:54 p.m.: One of the weekend’s buzz topics: Could anyone last a minute against Justice Gutierrez from Pomona? The answer is a resounding no.
The 100-pound wrestler pinned all four of her opponents in under 60 seconds during the Class 5A girls tournament, including a remarkable 59-second pin of Widefield’s Vivienne Arellano in the final. This marks title number two for Gutierrez, now halfway to a potential four-time status. — Matt Schubert
4:40 p.m.: The festivities have commenced at Ball Arena, beginning with the lightest weight classes. One of the first state champions of the evening is Pueblo Central’s Acelyn Duran, who achieved a pin in merely 47 seconds to grab the Class 4A girls 100-pound title. — Matt Schubert
3:45 p.m.: For the first time in quite a while, the Class 5A boys team title race promises to be thrilling.
Pomona, aiming for its seventh consecutive title, entered the finals with a slim lead over Ponderosa (213-192) after gaining points in consolation rounds. The Panthers, however, have one less finalist (5) compared to Ponderosa (6).
