Tragic Stampede Claims Lives at New Delhi Railway Station
At least 15 individuals lost their lives in a tragic stampede at a railway station in New Delhi, India, according to official reports released on Sunday.
Delhi’s caretaker Chief Minister, Atishi, who is known by just one name, confirmed that the deceased were transported to Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narain Hospital in the capital.
The unfortunate incident occurred late Saturday when a large crowd had gathered at the New Delhi railway station, eagerly waiting to board trains to participate in the Maha Kumbh Hindu festival in northern India.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his sorrow over the incident, stating he was "distressed by the stampede." He extended his condolences to those mourning their loved ones and wished for a swift recovery for the injured. Modi also noted that officials were actively supporting those affected by this tragic event through a message on X.
In response to the calamity, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced that an investigation has been initiated to determine the causes of the stampede.
This incident follows a previous stampede at the same six-week festival last month, which resulted in at least 30 fatalities as millions of Hindus gathered to partake in sacred river rituals.
