Phoenix Suns forward Kevin Durant expressed surprise upon learning that he was mentioned in trade discussions ahead of last week’s deadline, as reported by Doug Haller from The Athletic.

Nevertheless, he responded to the news with a sense of professionalism.

“In this league, everyone can be traded,” Durant remarked. “I get it; anyone can become part of trade talks. I understand that reality.”

Durant’s name came up in rumors following stalled negotiations between the Miami Heat and the Suns regarding a potential Jimmy Butler trade, primarily because Miami was hesitant to assume Bradley Beal’s contract. Ultimately, Butler moved to Golden State, while Durant and Beal remained with their respective teams. Durant reportedly was not keen on the concept of returning to the Warriors for another term.

Durant aimed to maintain a positive outlook on the situation.

“It’s a compliment that teams in the league want me on their roster,” Durant noted, as shared by the Associated Press. “The fact that my organization is working hard to keep me or might even entertain trade offers is indicative of my demand.”

Reports suggest that Phoenix might consider trading Durant during the upcoming offseason. Alternatively, the Suns could explore the option of a two-year veteran extension for him, as Durant is set to earn $51.2 million in the 2024/25 season, followed by $54.7 million in 2025/26.

Durant is aware that the attention on him may grow as the season progresses, fueled by trade discussions and speculation about the summer.

“My aim has always been to fulfill my contract and see where that takes me,” Durant explained, according to Haller. “I can’t dwell on what may happen a year and a half from now. I realize that this will be a topic of conversation. One of the most frustrating aspects of being involved in trade talks is that all eyes will be on me for the remainder of the season — my body language, my interactions with the media after games, and my demeanor on the bench will be scrutinized, which is unfortunate.”

He also responded to a report by ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne labeling the team’s locker room environment as toxic.

“It’s unfair and careless to label our team as toxic based on a brief visit over several months,” Durant stated in a Yahoo Sports tweet.

Although Durant hasn’t played since last Monday due to an ankle injury, he is anticipated to return for Phoenix’s upcoming home game on Tuesday against Memphis. He is just 26 points away from becoming the eighth player in NBA history to reach 30,000 points in his career.
