The Vatican has announced that the duration of Pope Francis’ hospital stay is currently uncertain. The 88-year-old pontiff was admitted to the Agostino Gemelli Polyclinic in Rome on Friday due to a respiratory tract infection related to bronchitis, raising new concerns regarding his health.

According to a statement from the Vatican, the pope’s condition is considered "fair," but further details are expected in an official medical report scheduled for release on Saturday evening at 5 p.m. CET. Spokesman Matteo Bruni shared that the pope had a restful night and appeared to be in good spirits on Friday morning—he had breakfast and spent time reading newspapers.

There is anticipation surrounding whether Pope Francis will be able to deliver the Angelus prayer from the hospital balcony on Sunday. The Vatican confirmed that the pope is undergoing "necessary diagnostic tests" and continuing his treatment for bronchitis in a hospital setting.

In addition, it was noted that he has canceled his appointments for the next three days as a precaution.

Pope Francis has faced multiple health challenges in recent years, including abdominal surgery in 2023, and has been battling bronchitis recently. He has even required assistance from aides to read speeches and other documents. However, he was able to hold meetings at the Vatican on Friday morning just prior to his hospitalization, engaging with various dignitaries, including Slovakia’s prime minister and CNN’s Chief Executive Mark Thompson. Despite being mentally alert during these encounters, he experienced difficulty speaking for extended periods due to his breathing challenges.
