Release of Israeli Hostages Marks Continuation of Fragile Ceasefire in Gaza
KHAN YOUNIS, Gaza Strip (AP) – On Saturday, militants linked to Hamas released three Israeli male hostages, while Israeli forces reciprocated by freeing hundreds of prisoners, signaling that a fragile ceasefire, which had faced uncertainty in recent days, remains intact.
The three freed hostages—Iair Horn, 46, a dual citizen of Israel and Argentina; Sagui Dekel Chen, 36, an American-Israeli; and Alexander (Sasha) Troufanov, 29, a Russian-Israeli—were publicly displayed by militants in southern Gaza before they were transported to Israeli territory for reunion with their families and to undergo medical examinations.
All three men had been held captive following the devastating Oct. 7, 2023 attack on Kibbutz Nir Oz, a location severely impacted during the outbreak of the conflict. While the men appeared fatigued and pale, their condition was notably better compared to previous releases, which saw others emerge in desperate physical states after long periods of captivity.
A recent tense disagreement had raised concerns about the sustainability of the nearly month-long ceasefire, threatening potential hostilities to resume. Furthermore, President Donald Trump’s contentious proposal to relocate over 2 million Palestinians from Gaza has added further uncertainty regarding the ceasefire’s future.
In the latest developments, Hamas announced its intention to proceed with further hostages’ releases following negotiations with officials from Egypt and Qatar. The group reported that mediators had promised to eliminate obstacles to allow more humanitarian aid into Gaza, including essential supplies and medical assistance.
As part of a carefully orchestrated process, the hostages’ release saw them publicly address attendees before being handed over to the Red Cross in a ceremony attended by masked Hamas fighters who displayed Palestinian flags and banners.
In exchange for the hostages, Israel commenced the release of 369 Palestinian detainees, with the initial group arriving in Beitunia, where they were enthusiastically welcomed by family and friends after months of separation. Some released prisoners appeared visibly weakened, leading to immediate medical attention for a few.
This exchange marks the sixth occurrence since the truce began on Jan. 19. Prior to this, 21 hostages and over 730 Palestinian detainees had been released during the initial phase of the ceasefire.
Identity of Hostages and Released Prisoners
Iair Horn was abducted alongside his brother, Eitan Horn, who remains in captivity. Iair’s family expressed relief over his return, emphasizing the desire to secure Eitan’s release next. Sagui Dekel Chen was taken while working outside; his pregnant wife, Avital, sheltered with their two daughters during the attack. She shared her overwhelming happiness at reuniting with Sagui after the birth of their third child. Additionally, Alexander Troufanov was informed of his father’s death shortly after his release, further complicating his emotional return.
Among the Palestinian prisoners released were 36 individuals serving life sentences for crimes against Israelis. Notably, Ahmed Barghouti, linked to prominent militant Marwan Barghouti, was among those set free after being previously convicted of orchestrating attacks during the Second Intifada.
Ongoing Concerns for Remaining Hostages
Of the 251 individuals captured during the Oct. 7 assault, 73 are still held in Gaza, with many presumed dead. Concerns are rising about the wellbeing of those still in captivity, particularly after prior releases revealed alarming physical conditions among the former hostages.
The ceasefire faces significant challenges, especially as talks for a longer-term resolution remain stalled. Hamas had signaled a possible postponement of future hostage releases, alleging non-compliance from Israel in delivering necessary humanitarian supplies into Gaza.

Recent days have shown just how precarious this ceasefire is, with threats to resume fighting looming. The situation is further complicated by ongoing discussions about potential relocations of Palestinians, which have sparked international concerns and tensions within the region.
