A woman from Canada experienced a devastating incident while on vacation in the Caribbean, where she lost both hands following a shark encounter, as reported by The Telegraph. The 55-year-old had waded just a few feet into the water near Thompson Cove Beach in the Turks and Caicos Islands when the shark attacked, resulting in significant injuries.

The victim underwent surgery to amputate one hand at the wrist and the other partway down her forearm. After being rescued from the water, she was transported to Cheshire Hall Medical Centre for urgent care and is currently receiving further treatment in Canada.

“The shark involved was estimated to measure around six feet in length, although its species has not yet been identified. Initial reports indicate that the tourist was attempting to photograph the shark from a shallow area,” officials explained.

While officials have not confirmed the type of shark, witnesses believe it may have been a bull shark. Notably, the predator had been lingering in the vicinity for about 40 minutes before the attack occurred.

Statistics estimate that approximately 83 individuals fall victim to unprovoked shark attacks each year. In some regions, such as southern Australia and the eastern coast of the United States, shark attacks are reportedly increasing.
