Toshiro Mifune passed away from multiple organ failure in 1997 at the age of 77, but his legacy continues to thrive. Capcom has found a way to honor this legendary actor by using his likeness in the upcoming game Onimusha: Way of the Sword.
As described on the game’s official website, “The game features a fierce young samurai who is perpetually engaged in intense and brutal combat.” To embody the character of Miyamoto Musashi, Capcom has enlisted Toshiro Mifune’s iconic appearance as a digital model.
Fans who watched the Onimusha anime on Netflix, released in late 2023, will recognize the familiar character of Miyamoto Musashi. The creators of the series were delighted to showcase their innovative efforts to bring Mifune’s likeness into the animated realm for promotional purposes.
The Onimusha video game series has a history of incorporating actors, whether they are alive or deceased, for its main characters. For instance, Takeshi Kaneshiro portrayed Samonosuke Akechi in Onimusha: Warlords, while later titles featured Yūsaku Matsuda, who sadly passed away from bladder cancer in 1989 at just 40, and Jean Reno as the faces of their protagonists.
Mifune’s role in Onimusha: Way of the Samurai was made possible through a collaborative effort with Mifune Productions, the company established by the actor in 1962, which likely retains the rights to his likeness today.
