Aaron Keller, the Game Director for Overwatch, has announced that players can look forward to receiving a significant amount of complimentary cosmetics when loot boxes make their return in Season 15.
Season 15 of Overwatch is set to finally achieve its sequel-like status with some of the most exciting content updates yet, including the introduction of a hero perks system. In a nostalgic return, the game will also be reinstating features that players love, such as the free loot box system.
Following Overwatch’s shift to a free-to-play approach and the removal of loot boxes, players faced challenges in acquiring complimentary cosmetics, particularly the sought-after Legendary-tier skins. Nevertheless, as Keller suggests, those days may be behind us, as players can anticipate a substantial number of free loot boxes upon their return.
Players can earn legendary skins for free again
In a recent dialogue with Emongg, Keller shared insights about what players can expect from the revamped lootbox system in Overwatch 2.
“During the first season, we’re giving away an enormous amount,” Keller stated. “While not every season will be like this, it’s going to be through challenges, events, Twitch drops, and a Discord program that will have accompanying lootboxes. Players can expect well over 100 complimentary lootboxes if they play during Season 15.”
Keller clarified that such generous giveaways may not be a recurring trend in future seasons, so players should temper their expectations. However, this still presents a fantastic opportunity to acquire excellent skins without cost.

Expanding on the loot box system, Keller unveiled additional player-friendly features designed to enhance the experience. Crucially, players will not be able to purchase loot boxes, ensuring that this system remains entirely free-to-play. Moreover, measures will be implemented to prevent duplicate items from being awarded.
“If you encounter a duplicate item, it will reroll to provide a new one,” Keller explained. “You’ll receive four items with the same details as before, and at the end of each season, all your loot boxes will be automatically opened.”
Loot boxes are just one of the many exciting new features debuting in Overwatch’s Season 15. Players can look forward to earning these cosmetics while exploring the new hero perks system, which promises to revolutionize character experiences in the game.
