As an avid reader who dives into a new book nearly every week, one of my best investments has been the Kindle Paperwhite. Although I cherish the feel of a physical book whenever possible, the convenience of moving on to the next title in a series with just a click is simply unbeatable. Plus, since I do most of my reading at night, the built-in backlight is a true lifesaver.
That said, acquiring a Kindle can be quite an investment. Amazon doesn’t frequently offer discounts on Kindle devices, but when they do, it’s a perfect opportunity to snag one at a reduced price. Right now, Amazon is lowering the cost of the Kindle Paperwhite during their Presidents’ Day and Valentine’s Day promotions.

Currently, Amazon is only offering a discount on the black model of the Kindle Paperwhite, leaving the jade and raspberry versions at their regular prices. This should not be a major concern since you can personalize your Kindle with a range of stylish cases and covers. Though the 16% discount might not seem extensive, it’s enough to nearly cover the price of a case.
I highly recommend pairing your Kindle with a case. Just close the front flap, and the device will automatically enter sleep mode, preserving battery life.
Is This a Worthwhile Deal?
The Kindle Paperwhite rarely goes on sale, making any discount a valuable opportunity. However, it’s worth noting that this isn’t the lowest price we’ve seen for this model. The most significant discount was offered during Black Friday and Cyber Monday when it was priced at $129.99. Overall, this marks the first discount of 2025, so if you’ve been waiting for a sale, now’s the time to act.
Should I Consider the Standard Kindle Instead?
In general, we recommend the Paperwhite as the top choice for anyone looking to buy a Kindle, though the 2024 standard version remains a strong contender with similar features. I own both the newest Kindle Paperwhite and the standard model, and I’ve noticed the main differences lie in size and price. The standard Kindle boasts a 6-inch display versus the larger 7-inch screen of the Paperwhite. Both models have a built-in backlight and dark mode, so if you prefer a smaller device, the regular Kindle is an excellent alternative, especially since it’s more budget-friendly, even at full price.

Is Kindle Unlimited Necessary?
When you buy a Kindle, a Kindle Unlimited subscription is not required to enjoy reading. The Kindle store often has free books available, and you can also purchase books directly through your device. Additionally, you can download free titles from other platforms like Libby and enjoy them on your Kindle, should you want to keep costs down.
Amazon does offer the chance to combine your Kindle purchase with a Kindle Unlimited subscription, providing an initial three-month free trial. As a current subscriber, I highly recommend it if you plan on reading extensively. It’s particularly beneficial for diving into popular bestsellers and genres like LitRPG series that often have multiple volumes.
