In a detailed post on the official Browns website that may not capture the attention of many readers, the team has publicly shared its plans for financing a new domed stadium in Brook Park.

Estimated at $2.4 billion, the Haslam Sports Group, the franchise’s ownership, seeks to have the public sector contribute $1.2 billion towards half of the base stadium cost, while the remaining funds, including any potential overruns, would come from private investments.

This public funding would be sourced from the city, county, and state levels.

In an additional report by Daryl Ruiter from 92.3 The Fan in Cleveland, he highlights details not addressed in the Browns’ official announcement. The team believes it must finalize funding by June 30 to commence construction within the first quarter of 2026.

It’s important to note that the current lease for the stadium is set to expire following the 2028 season.

During discussions with Ruiter and other journalists, Browns owner Jimmy Haslam acknowledged that while renovating the existing stadium is an option, it’s not the preferable choice.

“A renovation is much easier for us,” he explained. “It requires significantly less of our financial resources and is less complicated. I don’t view it as the best solution. If I were to take a shortsighted approach, I might think it’s someone else’s problem in 15 or 20 years. That’s not the right perspective. I see renovation as merely a temporary fix.”

Additionally, Haslam noted that the NFL has indicated interest in bringing the draft back to Cleveland and hosting it at the waterfront should the new domed stadium come to fruition.

However, the project faces two significant challenges. Firstly, public sentiment is increasingly resistant to subsidizing wealthy sports team owners. If any aspects of the funding proposal are put to a vote, they are likely to be rejected.

Secondly, legal proceedings are ongoing regarding whether the Haslams can relocate the team from Cleveland, based on stipulations outlined in the Art Modell Law, established after the original Browns team moved to Baltimore.
