A recent discovery in the East River has led to the identification of human remains previously found inside a suitcase. Authorities have confirmed that the remains belong to 65-year-old Edwin Echevarria, and his roommate has now been charged with his murder, according to police reports released Thursday morning.
Christian Millet, 23, faces charges of second-degree murder in connection with the death of Echevarria, who resided with him on Columbia Street in New York City’s Lower East Side. Millet reportedly informed law enforcement that he assaulted Echevarria, knocking him to the ground before inflicting fatal injuries by stomping on his head. Following the attack, he is alleged to have dismembered Echevarria’s body using a tool and concealed the remains in the suitcase. As of now, the whereabouts of the rest of Echevarria’s body remain unknown.
The police have not disclosed how they identified Echevarria nor have they provided information regarding the motive behind the murder.
On February 5th, a ferry captain in New York City spotted the suitcase floating in the East River, as noted in an internal police report. Unable to retrieve it himself, the captain contacted the Police Department’s Harbor Unit for assistance. Officers arrived and successfully recovered the suitcase around 5:30 PM. After inspecting its contents, they transported it to Pier 16 on Manhattan’s East Side, situated approximately a quarter-mile south of the Brooklyn Bridge.
