Derek Carr, the quarterback for the New Orleans Saints, is projected to have a staggering cap hit exceeding $51.4 million in the 2025 season. This situation has sparked rumors that the team might consider alternative options during the upcoming offseason.
At the introductory press conference for new head coach Kellen Moore on Thursday, he was questioned about Carr’s status as the starting quarterback for Week One. Moore refrained from making any definitive promises in his reply.
“Derek is an exceptional quarterback in this league,” Moore stated. “I have immense respect for him and the journey he has traveled. He is undeniably a starter and a top-tier player. I’m truly excited to collaborate with him as we navigate this process.”
Parting ways with Carr, who is already set to receive $10 million in guaranteed funds, would not yield significant cap relief for the Saints. Additionally, designating him as a post-June 1 cut wouldn’t grant them the necessary cap space to enhance the roster until after free agency concludes. Consequently, restructuring his contract and retaining him for at least another season seems to be the most feasible option for New Orleans.
