This offseason, the Boston Red Sox were associated with numerous high-profile players who ultimately signed with other teams.
A key topic of discussion around this acquisition is not just the $40 million average annual value, but also where Bregman will fit into the infield.
Bringing Bregman to the team presents clear advantages, and ESPN analysts Bradford Doolittle and David Schoenfield rated this signing as a B+.
Doolittle expressed, “This is an excellent alignment of team, player, ballpark, and fan base. Bregman, who shares familial connections with Red Sox icon Ted Williams, will provide a vital right-handed bat, sought-after defensive flexibility, and a commanding presence in the clubhouse—something his new manager, Alex Cora, remembers well from coaching him in Houston.”

Doolittle also noted that Bregman’s addition to the top of the batting order, following Jarren Duran and precedeing left-handed hitters Rafael Devers and Triston Casas, creates a balanced lineup. However, determining his defensive position may pose challenges for Cora and the coaching staff.
With Trevor Story currently at shortstop, the focus shifts to whether Bregman will start the season at second base or if Devers will transition from third to first. This decision will have a domino effect on players including Casas, Masataka Yoshida, Vaugh Grissosn, Kristian Campbell, and Marcelo Mayer.
Doolittle remarked, “These are excellent dilemmas to face! The Red Sox appear significantly stronger than they did just yesterday. With a favorable long-term financial outlook, Bregman’s presence won’t adversely affect their future, even if he experiences a decline, which is unlikely. Boston’s position in the AL East is looking up, although they remain part of a competitive group of above-average teams across the American League.”
One thing is clear: the Red Sox have effectively strengthened their roster this offseason. Boston now possesses a genuine opportunity to challenge the New York Yankees for the American League East title.
