MERCER COUNTY, Ohio — In a significant health update, authorities have confirmed Ohio’s first case of bird flu amid the ongoing outbreak, as reported by the Ohio Department of Health (ODH) on Wednesday.

The ODH identified the probable case of influenza A(H5), commonly referred to as Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza or bird flu, in an adult farmer residing in Mercer County, which is situated approximately two hours from Cincinnati.

This individual contracted the virus after coming into contact with deceased commercial poultry that tested positive for the disease, according to the ODH.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the overall risk of bird flu transmission to humans remains low at this time.

To minimize the risk of infection, the ODH advises individuals to avoid direct interaction with wild birds, as well as with sick or deceased poultry or other animals whenever feasible. If you encounter sick or dead birds or animals, it is recommended to contact your local health department or veterinarian for guidance before intervening.

For those required to handle sick animals or birds, the ODH has outlined several safety precautions:

• Wear protective gear such as gloves, N95 masks or well-fitting face coverings, and goggles.
• Thoroughly wash your hands after handling any birds or animals that are ill.
• Refrain from touching your face—nose, mouth, or eyes—after coming into contact with birds or other animals, or any materials they may have touched.
• Change clothing before interacting with healthy birds or animals after having dealt with sick ones.

Beyond Ohio’s borders, the CDC reports a total of 68 confirmed human cases of bird flu during the current outbreak, which includes one fatality. Most of these cases have been reported in California, Colorado, and Washington.
