In a recent U.N. report, it was revealed that the violent suppression of student demonstrators in Bangladesh last year resulted in the deaths of approximately 1,400 individuals, a figure significantly higher than earlier estimates. This tragic toll took place under the leadership of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who faced widespread criticism for her harsh measures against the student-led protests, which ultimately culminated in the end of her 15-year governance.

The U.N. fact-finding mission highlighted a series of alarming human rights abuses attributed to Hasina’s administration, including extrajudicial killings, arbitrary detentions, and instances of torture. The actions of Hasina and senior officials may rise to the level of crimes against humanity, according to the report.

Volker Türk, the U.N. human rights chief, stated, “The evidence and testimonies we collected depict a troubling reality of systemic state violence and targeted executions that represent some of the most serious human rights violations, potentially qualifying as international crimes.”

Türk further noted that it is evident the former government’s upper echelons were complicit in severe violations, including the torture and mistreatment of minors, as well as sexual violence against women.

In August, as the student protests intensified around her residence, Hasina fled to India. The Indian government, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is currently providing her refuge, allowing her to influence Bangladeshi politics from abroad. This complicates the efforts of the interim government as they strive to restore democracy in the nation.
