MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University Football Coach Rich Rodriguez has announced the return of former Mountaineer star Pat White, who will take on the role of assistant quarterbacks coach and assistant to the head coach at his alma mater.
“It’s a truly special moment to have Pat White rejoin our team in Morgantown as part of our football coaching staff,” Rodriguez expressed. “He has played a pivotal role in some of the most significant victories in our program’s history, and his presence will be invaluable in our quarterback meetings. Pat and I share a deep bond, and I am immensely proud of the quality coach and mentor he has become for young players.”
White makes his return to Morgantown after spending two years as an offensive assistant with the Los Angeles Chargers, followed by a year as a skill trainer and coach.
During his time with the Chargers, White contributed as an offensive assistant for both quarterbacks and wide receivers, helping the team achieve the second-best passing offense in the NFL and earn a playoff berth.
He has also held various coaching positions, including pass game coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Campbell (2022), interim offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Alabama State (2021), running backs coach at USF (2020), and quarterbacks coach at Alcorn State (2018-19).
As an exceptional player, White was recognized as one of the most versatile quarterbacks in the country. He made history as the first college quarterback to both start and win four consecutive bowl games from 2005 to 2008.
A native of Daphne, Alabama, White set 19 records across WVU, Big East, and NCAA platforms, including holding the record for the all-time rushing quarterback in NCAA history with 4,480 yards (a rank now held at second).
White led West Virginia to a remarkable 35-8 record as their starting quarterback, guiding the team to bowl victories in the 2006 Sugar Bowl, 2007 Gator Bowl, 2008 Fiesta Bowl, and the 2008 Meineke Car Care Bowl. He established Big East records for total touchdowns responsible for (103) and total offense (10,529 yards), becoming the first player in Big East history to surpass 10,000 passing yards. Throughout his career, he recorded a 7-2 record against ranked opponents.
Selected in the second round of the NFL Draft by the Miami Dolphins, White played the 2009 season with the Dolphins before signing with the Washington Redskins in 2013 and playing for the Edmonton Eskimos in the Canadian Football League in 2014. He announced his retirement from professional football in 2015.
White was also a talented baseball player, being chosen by the Anaheim Angels in the fourth round of the 2004 MLB Draft but chose to pursue his education at WVU. He was later drafted multiple times, including by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in 2007, the Cincinnati Reds in 2008, and the New York Yankees in 2009.
Inducted into the WVU Sports Hall of Fame, White graduated from West Virginia University in 2008 with a Regents Bachelor of Arts degree. He and his wife, Cristina, have two daughters, Daphne and Clara, along with two sons, Pat II and Dubois.
